KEEPING KINSHASA HEALTHY

The Congolese capital is one of the fastest growing cities on earth. Nobody knows exactly how many people now live there, but some estimate it is as many as 17 million. The teeming city suffers from terrible infrastructure, poor sanitation, a crumbling road network and a brutal tropical climate. In this context, a hugely overstretched health service, backed up by international NGOs, is battling to protect the city's residents from diseases like HIV, cholera and yellow fever, all of which thrive here.
