Photojournalism as an industry is full of incredibly talented photographers struggling to get their work published and make ends meet. That's because when it comes to building a successful, sustainable and rewarding career in this increasingly competitive media landscape, taking good photos is no longer enough.
What sets apart those who are able to make it work is usually not the quality of the pictures, but the basic nuts and bolts: the ability to find and recognise strong stories that will appeal to editors; knowing how to plan, fund, shoot and report them; knowing how to build strong visual narratives and put together a photo essay frame by frame; identifying the right publications to target; knowing how to craft a strong pitch and present the story in a way that sticks.
After 15 years as a full-time freelance photojournalist working for major media outlets around the world, these are things I've come to learn. I learnt by making all the mistakes there are to make. In these sessions I hope to spare you the trouble of making them for yourself.
Sessions are aimed at anyone from aspiring photojournalists looking to enter the industry, to early- or mid-career professionals looking to boost the reach and impact of their work.
I genuinely believe that the only pre-requisites for success in this industry are basic camera gear, a half decent eye and a little freelance hustle. The rest can be learned.
If you can make it work, it's the best job in the world.
I currently offer two options:
Cost: $200
(Sessions are free for working photographers from Africa and other under-represented regions, depending on availability).
Cost: $550
