Arctic Sunrise
Built in 1975, the MV Arctic Sunrise started life as a seal hunting ship before being purchased and converted by Greenpeace in 1995. Since then she has been travelling the world's oceans investigating illegal fishing, conducting scientific surveys, carrying out protest actions, and supporting campaigns for greater ocean protection. 50 metres long, she typically carries a team of between twenty and thirty people from all across the globe, from engineers and deckhands to scientists and campaigners, united in their shared goal of fighting the ongoing destruction of the marine environment. These images were shot over the course of several weeks in 2020 and 2021 during which the ship investigated the bycatch of sharks by longliners in the mid-Atlantic, documented the transshipment of tuna at sea, studied sperm whale behaviour near the Seychelles and explored a little known but critically important seagrass ecosystem in the western Indian Ocean, among other things.
