Market Economy
With over ten thousand individual stalls, Kejetia was the largest open air market in West Africa, a thriving, bustling, kaleidoscopic space that brought people together from all over central Ghana and constituted the beating heart of the region's economy. It was Ghana's answer to Amazon or Walmart, and in its winding alleys you could find everything from dried vultures imbued with healing powers to brand new iPhones and ingots of pure gold. The site has been a centre of trade since the 13th century. These images were taken during the last months of the market's existence, before it was demolished in favour of a shopping mall.
