After the storm
In March 2018 Mozambique was hit by one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in southern Africa. Cyclone Idai made landfall near the city of Beira and inundated vast tracts of central Mozambique killing 1000, leaving thousands more missing, wiping out crops, sweeping away homes, and costing an estimated $1b in damage. Just six weeks later a second storm, cyclone Kenneth, hit the coast further north with even stronger winds, flattening towns and villages in its path. It was the first time since records began that Mozambique has been hit by two such powerful storms in the same season.
