The Island at the Centre of the World
Every year, over a million tourists visit the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, drawn from all over the world by its famous white-sand beaches. But many have little knowledge of the fascinating cultural heritage of this young nation. Until the 17th century, Mauritius was uninhabited. Since then, waves of migrants from Holland, Portugal, Britain, India, Africa, China, and France moved in, creating a uniquely diverse cultural mix. This project, shot originally for Geo Magazine, explores the myriad influences and industries that form the beating heart of the island, out of sight of the tourist resorts that line the coast.
